How to Apply for Dual Citizenship in the Philippines
You can apply for dual citizenship at the Bureau of Immigration (BI) in Intramuros, Manila which is another tourist attraction in the Philippines.
(Don’t forget to visit the Fort Santiago. See the photo above.) The contact information of BI is located below along with the requirements and fees.
For now get to know about the process of getting a dual citizenship:
- Get the required documents from either at the Public Information and Assistance Unit (PIAU) at Bureau of Immigration or from its website:
- Checklist of Documentary Requirements
- Application Form
- Supplement for Dependent
- Submit the documents for pre-screening to the Central Receiving Unit (CRU)
- Take Oath of Allegiance
- Get the Order of Payment Slip (OPS)
- Pay the required fees
- Verify status of application whether approved or not
If your application is approved, claim the Certificate of Retention/Reacquisition of Philippine Citizenship, Order of Approval and Oath of Allegiance.
Requirements for Dual Citizenship Application
The requirements for dual citizenship are divided into adult and child applicants for clarity. Here are some reminders in filling up the form and completing the requirements:
- Answer in English using CAPITAL LETTERS
- Arrange the requirements in the order as listed in the Checklist of Documentary Requirements
- Compile the requirements in a egal size (8½ x 14 in.) folder
I was surprised to know that you can have an authorized representative to file on your behalf.
So if you have a representative, attach a photocopy of the Bureau of Immigration (BI) Accreditation Identification (ID) Certificate or an original Special Power of Attorney (SPA) for EACH applicant with a photocopy of a valid government issued ID of attorney-in-fact.
#1: Checklist of Documentary Requirements for Petition for Retention/Re-Acquisition of Philippine Citizenship (Adult)
These are the list requirements for applicants who are former natural-born Philippine citizens who acquired foreign citizenship by naturalization.
- Accomplished, verified petition/application form (BI Form 2014-01-005 Rev 0)
- Two (2) pieces 2×2 photograph with white background, taken within the last three months from the date of application
- Two (2) original copies of Oath of Allegiance to be taken before an authorized Bureau of Immigration (BI) Legal Officer
- ORIGINAL COPY of proof as natural-born Philippine citizen:
- Philippine Birth Certificate
- Cancelled Philippine passport (to b e placed in an envelope)
- Voter’s Identification Card
- Philippine Marriage Certificate indicating the Philippine citizenship of the petitioner
- Any other Philippine-issued official document proving natural-born Philippine citizenship
- Original and photocopy of valid foreign passport
- Photocopy of Certificate of Naturalization or other naturalization documents, with English translation if written in other foreign language, or affidavit stating how and when foreign citizenship was acquired

#2: Checklist of Documentary Requirements for Each Dependent Child
- Accomplished Supplement for Dependent Form (BI Form 2014-01-006 Rev 1)
- Two (2) pieces 2×2 photograph with white background, taken within the last three months from the date of application
- Photocopy of Birth Certificate of Dependent Child
- Photocopy of valid foreign passport bio-page of Dependent Child
Fees
Application Fee – PHP 2,500
Legal Research Fee (LRF) for each immigration fee except Head Tax and Fines – PHP 10
Express Fee – PHP 500
Total – PHP 3,010

What’s Next
After getting a dual citizenship and you are still in the Philippines, might as well get a new passport. The process is faster since the passport is locally made.
If you choose this route, make sure you have the time; if not, get a new Philippine passport in Canada through the Philippine Embassy and Consulates or wait for the consular outreach mission in your area.
Final Thoughts
It’s up to you whether you want to apply for dual citizenship in the Philippines or in Canada. If you will spend a lot of time in the Philippines then follow the steps in this post.
If not, then apply for dual citizenship in Canada instead. You can make the application in the Philippine Embassy in Toronto and in Philippine Consulate Generals in Calgary, Toronto, and Vancouver.
